JetStar Baggage Allowance

Free check in baggage allowance on JetStar flights depends on the fare type booked. However, it does allow free cabin baggage allowance for economy and business class passengers.

Check-in Baggage Allowance

In general, you are required to pay for the check-in luggage you are carrying with you. It is only in some of the fare categories where the ticket price would include the free check-in baggage.

You have the option to buy check-in baggage in weight categories of 15kg, 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg and 40kg. There is no limit on the number of pieces to be carried so long as these are within the permitted or bought allowance by weight and each bag shall not be more than 32 kg by weight. Only electric wheelchairs and scooters are exempt for this weight restriction of 32kg.

Check in baggage allowances for different fare rules are given in table below:

Economy Starter fares

No checked baggage allowance

Can buy 15kg, 20kg, 25kg, 30kg, 35kg or 40kg baggage allowance.

Economy Starter fare with Plus bundle

20kg allowance; 10kg for Jetstar Japan (GK) domestic flights).

Can buy an additional 20kg if you need it (up to 30kg for Jetstar Japan (GK) domestic flights).

You can buy up to an additional 10kg of checked baggage allowance.

For any bag of more than 1 meter in length there is a fee for oversize (see below).

Certain items can be carried in check in baggage for free. These include the stroller, port-a-cot, portable high chair and car seat. A wheelchair can also be brought if you need it.

Baggage transfers in case of connections: In general, JetStar does not make transfers of baggage from one flight to another. Therefore, you will have to take the baggage at stopover airport and check in again. If the connection is not on flights with JetStar, Qantas or partner airlines of JetStar, a 3 hour time interval shall be taken.

Carry-on Baggage Allowance

Carry-on baggage allowance is free upto certain weight, size and number of pieces limit. This is further based on the cabin class of travel.

Economy Starter, Starter Plus and Starter Max travellers are allowed 7kg in cabin per person.

FlexiBiz passengers are allowed 10kg each.

Business Class passengers are allowed 14 kg each.

Sporting Equipments

Sporting equipments can be carried as a part of the check-in baggage. However, these are liable to be charges for being oversized or overweight. Therefore, if you are planning to carry any of these, then it is better to have a higher check-in baggage allowance booked earlier at the time of booking a ticket. Otherwise, if you pay at airport, it could be more expensive.

Golf Clubs

Any item longer than 1 meter is liable to be charged.

Bicycle

Any item longer than 1 meter is liable to be charged. Bicycle tyres shall be deflated. Pedals shall be detached. Front wheel must be detached if longer than 180 cm.

Surfboard, skis or snowboard

Max. length allowed depends on which JetStar airline you are flying. The lengths are already given in the table above.

Fishing Rods

Any item longer than 1 meter is liable to be charged. Fishing rods shall not be attached to other luggage. Max length allowed depends on which JetStar airline you are flying with.

Scuba diving

Any item longer than 1 meter is liable to be charged. Compress gas tanks shall be empty. Spear guns shall be unloaded. Knives have to be carried in check in baggage.

Windsurfers or sailboards

These are not allowed as check-in baggage since these are more than the length restrictions. These shall be sent through cargo.

Musical Instruments

Small musical instruments of weight less than 7 kg and of dimensions up to 85cm*36cm*23cm can be taken as a carry on luggage.

Large musical instruments than this can be carried on a separate seat which needs to be bought. Otherwise, it can be checked in. If the weight is more than 15 kg, it is mandatory to take it as a check in baggage.

Every flight has a limited quota of carrying musical instruments, so you must inform the airline before booking tickets so that it can tell you whether you can bring the musical instrument or not.

Is there a list of items which may not be carried in carry on or checked in luggage?

Admin Reply :

Airlines define general categories of items which can not be carried, such as corrosive, inflammable, sharp edged items, etc. Some are prohibited in check-in (such as powerbanks, lithium ion batteries, precious items, etc.), some others are not allowed in cabin and some are not allowed at all. There is a lot of literature on internet for these regulations.

If you want to enquire about anything in general, you can ask here. We will try to help you with to the best of our ability.

My wife and i will be travelling with Jetstar in business class from Sydney to Honolulu in October 2019 and understand we will have a checked baggage allowance of 30kg each . Are we allowed to bring 3 checked bags of 20kg between us to utilise the overall 60kg allowance or do each of us have to achieve the 30kg which unfortunately would likley mean bringing 4 bags which we do not want to do. Please advise Kind regards

Admin Reply :

Yes, you can bring 3 check-in bags of 20 kg each if both of you are travelling on same PNR. Size of check in bag shall be within permitted allowance.
