Alaska Airlines Special Assistance

Infants

Children under 2 years of age can travel in the laps of adults. One infant per adult is allowed to be carried in the lap.

There is no separate baggage allowance for infants carried in lap.

Diaper bag is counted towards free cabin baggage allowance of adult.

There is no fee for lap infants while travelling on domestic flights within US, but there is about $17 fee for each of them while travelling from an international destination to United States.

Unaccompanied Minors

The unaccompanied minor service of Alaska Airlines is available for passengers aged between 5 and 17 years. This service is available on both the domestic and international flights. This service carries a fees which is dependent on age of the child and whether the flight is non-stop or connecting one.

The parents or guardians of the child have to complete the documentary requirements at the airport. Also, they are required to provide the name and contact details of the person to whom the child is handed over at the destination.

The unaccompanied minor passengers shall have at least 30 minutes ahead of normal check-in time.

Wheelchair Assistance

Alaska airlines provides wheelchair assistance at the airport, at the time of boarding the aircraft and on the aircraft.

The airline advices you to arrive at least 2 hrs before the scheduled departure time of the flight at the airport and contact the airline representative at the airport for the wheelchair.

The airline also recommends that the passenger on wheelchair shall travel with a safety assistant since the airline will be able to provide only limited assistance to that passenger. This assistance could be by way of customer service agent or wheelchair escort taking the passenger to baggage claim, in-terminal counter for car rental or at the curbside, the person would not assist the passenger for ground transportation.

For getting on to the plane, the airline provides lift or ramp or even the slide board.

There is also a provision for aisle wheelchair inside the plane.

Personal wheelchairs

Alaska Airlines allows carriage of personal wheelchairs of all types.

If you are carrying personal wheelchair, you must arrive at least 2 hrs before departure time and shall be at boarding gate at least 1 hr before departure time. Further, the size of wheelchair shall not be more than 33 inches in height and 34 inches in width. Also, there is a maximum weight limit of wheelchair to be carried on-board. This is:

  • Boeing 737 - 500 pounds or 227 kg

  • Bombardier Q400 - 500 pounds or 227 kg

  • Bombardier CRJ - 300 pounds or 136 kg

  • Embraer E175 - 400 pounds or 181 kg

Wheelchairs with lithium ion batteries would require removal of batteries and packing these in protective covering. These batteries are stowed in cabin and not allowed in check-in baggage.

Visually and Hearing Impaired

The airline provides assistance to visually impaired passengers at the airport, on board the plane and also helps in connecting flights. However, the airline makes it clear that it will not assist for ground transportation or wait with you for long. Therefore, it is better to have an assistant with you, who shall be travelling with valid ticket.

Hearing impaired passenger are required to mention the same at the gate so that they can be assisted. These passengers are provided assistance at the time of booking tickets, making special service requests and answering your questions.

Relay services are also available to passenger by dialling 711.

Service Animals

There is no charge for trained service animals or emotional support animals. The animals are required to be seated under the seat of passenger and these shall not occupy a seat, tray or aisle.

With effect from May 1, 2018, there is a need of production of documentation at least 48 hours before travel time. The documentation is by way of Animal Health Advisory Form ( a certified copy of animal health certificate from the vet), animal mental health form and animal behaviour form.

For people carrying trained emotional support animals, the requirement is that the passenger shall be qualified to travel with such animal. And, the person is qualified for this purpose if he or she has certain disabilities, that are given below:

  1. Mental or emotional disability as DSM IV manual

  2. Animal is needed as accommodation for air travel and for activity at destination

  3. This disability shall be mentioned on a certificate issued by mental health professional under whose care the passenger is.

  4. The letter or certificate shall have license number of the doctor, date and the state under whose jurisdiction it falls.

Pregnant Women

There is no special restriction for women to fly on Alaska Airlines. However, there is a clear mention that if your doctor declares you fit for flying, then that is sufficient for the airline.
