What you get back depends on what your ticket's fare conditions say and on why you cancel. Whether the airline fails to fly you or you choose not to travel, the unused ticket or portion is repaid under those rules.
7 business dayscard refund request sent to the issuer (US flights)
20 business daysrefund for cash, cheque or other payments (US flights)
30 minnotice of delay, cancellation or diversion on US flights
Taxesgovernment taxes and fees are not refunded on voluntary refunds
If you cancel
- You receive the fare paid minus reasonable service or cancellation charges.
- If part of the ticket was used, the refund is the fare paid less the fare for the part flown, again minus charges.
- Government taxes and fees are not refunded on a voluntary refund.
- The airline can refuse a refund asked for after the ticket has expired, or for a ticket shown to officials as proof you plan to leave a country unless you can prove otherwise.
- For a lost ticket, repayment comes once validity ends, with satisfactory proof, a modest administration fee and your promise to return the money if someone else uses it.
- Only the issuing airline or its authorised agent can process a voluntary refund. The money returns to the named traveller, or to whoever paid and can prove it, using the original payment route.
- Refunds follow the laws of the country where the ticket was bought and where the refund is paid, normally in the currency you paid.
If the airline cancels or changes the flight
- When the airline cancels, fails to operate on schedule, cannot give a confirmed seat, skips a stop or makes you miss a connection, you get the whole ticket price back if no part was flown. A part-flown ticket returns at least what remains after the fare for the flown section.
- The airline may offer a credit voucher instead of money where the disruption came from extraordinary circumstances such as air traffic decisions, war, weather, security risks or strikes.
- Options it may offer: another flight with space, re-routing to your destination (on its flights, another airline or ground transport) with no extra charge, a refund, or help and care such as meals, hotel and transfers.
- For delays or cancellations of 30 minutes or more, the airline gives prior notice as soon as it can. A route closure is announced at least one month ahead, and a retiming of 3 hours or more is notified when decided or at most a day before take-off.
- For departures from the EU covered by EC Regulation 261/2004, write to the airline first and wait 28 days before using a claims agent.
- On an overbooked flight, volunteers are sought first, and older travellers, families with babies or young children, and disabled passengers are the last to be denied boarding.
Extras and add-ons
- Extra baggage you buy is non-refundable on voluntary changes or cancellations, and unused weight is lost. It is refundable when the airline changes or cancels the flight, offloads you for safety or security, or cannot provide the baggage.
- Seat selection fees: a changed seat is refunded when the original seat type is still available and you buy another of the same or higher type; fees are not refunded if you take a lower seat, or you are upgraded to Business.
- Seat-and-extra bundles are non-refundable when you cancel or change voluntarily, but refunded for the affected part if the airline changes or cancels the flight.
- Upgrade offers are refunded if the flight is cancelled, or you cannot sit in the higher cabin for reasons that are the airline's fault, or on compassionate grounds. Ask in writing within 3 months of the flight.
Flights to or from the United States
- For card payments, the airline sends the refund to the issuer within 7 business days after you ask. Cash, cheque or other payments are refunded within 20 business days.
- The money goes back by the original payment method, less any third-party charges.
- Flight status information is provided within 30 minutes of the airline learning of a change, at the gate, on its website and through its call centre.
- Delayed or misplaced bags: the airline aims to deliver within 24 hours and reimburses reasonable expenses. If a bag is lost, any fee you paid for it is refunded.
- Complaints are acknowledged within 48 hours, with a detailed reply aimed at 5 working days.

It is very important for you to know the airline policies to avoid hassles. The airline just went ahead with its own policy and there is no way it could have accomodated your concern. If you feel aggrieved, you can take up matters with the airline or its regulator in its country.
Ideally, you shall not. Please ask them to accomodate you with the original fare.
REfunds are based on conditions of fare ticket. PLease check the same on your ticket or get in touch with the airline.
Go to airline website--->My Trip---->select Manage Booking and from there you can cancel it.
The quantum of money refunded is never told to third parties. So, it will be either Malaysian airlines or the agency, wherever you booked tickets, which will inform you about it.

We do not think you will be entitled to compensation. Please go through the link here: https://www.mavcom.my/en/consumer/flight-delays-cancellations/. For details, please contact the legal experts.
If you traveled by a flight provided by the airline, your case for compensation might not be strong. However, you can still go ahead and claim it from the airline only.

I will be unable to make the trip so am enquiring about your policy for cancellation for 1 of the tickets. Can the fare be refunded? Are there fees? If so how much?
Christine Schooling
If tickets are refundable, these will surely be done. Exactly how much would be refunded is best told by the airline and it will not tell this information to us. So, please contact the airline or agency, whoever booked tickets, directly.
Of course, you will get the refunds if the tickets booked are refundable in nature. Please do raise a request for refund after ticket cancellation with whomsoever you booked tickets with.
