Checked baggage
There are two systems. On weight routes the allowance is the total weight of your checked bags. On piece routes (the Americas and Africa) it is a number of pieces with a weight limit each. There is no piece allowance on Malaysia Airlines domestic flights, and no limit on the number of bags you check in.

- 20% off the extra baggage fee
- At the check-in counter
- Normal excess baggage rate
Charges follow the distance from your departure point to your final destination on a single itinerary, per kilogram. For routes to Africa or the Americas they are per piece. Extra baggage is only for flights operated by Malaysia Airlines: it does not apply to MASwings flights, or to interline and codeshare flights. If your baggage goes over your free allowance plus what you bought, the extra weight is charged at the normal rate at check-in.

Rules for extra baggage you buy
- It is not refundable. Unused weight (for example, 2 kg left over from 5 kg bought) is lost and cannot be transferred or exchanged.
- After a voluntary change, it carries over if: the change is on the same booking, the origin and destination are the same, the flights are operated by Malaysia Airlines, passenger details are unchanged, space is available, and domestic and international flights are not mixed. Changes can only be made at Malaysia Airlines ticket offices or the call centre.
- It cannot be moved to another passenger.
- If a bag is offloaded for safety or security reasons, the extra baggage fee for those items is refunded in full.
- Malaysia Airlines may change the rates and conditions at any time.
Special baggage
Bulky and oversized baggage
A bag over 158 cm (62 in) in length + height + width, or over 32 kg (70 lb), is oversized and may cost a surcharge. For pieces over 204 cm (80 in), MASKargo or a similar logistics provider can help. Some special baggage needs a reservation, and Malaysia Airlines may refuse certain pieces.

Large, delicate instruments
(cellos, pianos, guitars, accordions): can travel in the cabin on an extra seat you buy.
Large but durable instruments

This covers golf equipment, windsurfing boards and surfboards, masts and sailboards, canoes, non-motorised bikes, fishing gear, archery supplies, bowling equipment, hunting gear, parachutes, sporting weapons and ammunition, scuba gear, and snow and water-skiing gear.
