  • Economy Basic, short- and medium-haul: a carry-on bag of up to 8 kg can be bought for each route, online or via the Service Center, but not at the airport. Outbound and return each count as a route, connections included.
  • Status passengers: HON Circle Members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold customers on Economy Basic (short- and medium-haul) get one carry-on bag besides the personal item without paying. A second carry-on bag is not permitted. Other status levels (HON Circle, Senator, Frequent Traveller, Star Alliance Gold and Silver) get the allowance of the cabin they fly in.
  • Items counted inside your carry-on allowance: a folding garment bag (up to 57 x 54 x 15 cm and 8 kg), a foldable child's buggy ("pocket buggy", one per toddler, up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and fully collapsible), duty-free purchases (they do not add an extra bag) and a small musical instrument (up to 125 cm height + width + length and 8 kg).
  • Further items that cost nothing in the cabin: a baby bassinet or child seat for every small child, plus mobility aids, orthopaedic aids, prostheses and medical equipment.
  • Flights from the USA: US security (TSA) passes just a single carry-on bag together with a personal item, whatever your cabin or status. A second bag must be checked before the checkpoint, including on connecting flights after you arrive in the USA. First and Business passengers on some regional flights and country variations (for example from India and the USA) must also check the second carry-on bag.
  • If your carry-on is too big, too heavy or too many: it is removed at check-in or the gate and flown in the hold at your cost. Fees range between EUR 60 / CHF 60 / USD 75 and EUR 110 / CHF 110 / USD 125, depending on the route, payable by credit card only. On crowded flights even compliant bags may be put in the hold; Lufthansa then emails you and lets you hand them in at check-in free of charge. Keep valuables, medicines and battery devices with you in the cabin.
  • Economy Basic: available on European routes. Besides the personal item (laptop bag or small backpack), carry-on baggage, hold baggage and a seat can all be booked online up to two hours ahead of take-off.

No piece may measure more than 158 cm in total (width, height and depth). Anything larger or heavier, and any extra piece, is charged as excess baggage.

Does the price depend on when you pay?

Yes. Extra bags and the discounted first bag cost less when you add them online under "My Bookings" or through the Service Center than at the airport check-in desk. The tables below show both prices side by side. Economy Basic carry-on bags are not sold at the airport.

Free bags for children, babies and status members

  • Babies (0 to 2 years): one bag of 23 kg and 158 cm in total dimensions, on any route and at any Miles and More status, other than Economy Basic fares (short- and medium-haul) and Economy Light. On Economy Light only the accompanying adult may book an extra bag; further bags are excess baggage.
  • Children over 2 years: the same free allowance as adults in each cabin.
  • Per child, one of these is carried free: as checked baggage, a foldable stroller, foldable baby carriage, foldable handcart, foldable bicycle trailer or baby carrier; or as extra cabin baggage, a certified child safety seat, baby carrier or child restraint system. A pocket buggy (fully collapsible, up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm) is carried inside your normal cabin allowance, and goes to the hold if it makes you exceed that allowance. Electric pushchairs are refused. If a child under 2 uses a restraint system, you must buy a separate seat. A child aged 2 to 7 may use their own restraint system.
  • Intercontinental, HON Circle Members, Senators and Star Alliance Gold: one free extra bag on Economy Light, and a second on Premium Economy Light and Business Light. Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria flights (either direction) are excluded. Free carriage is arranged only at the check-in counter; if you book the bags online, through the Service Center or a travel agency, normal charges apply.
  • Golf: golf gear is free for members of HON Circle, Senators and Star Alliance Gold (not on short- and medium-haul Economy Basic, the Light fare or USA and Canada routes), and 23 kg is free for SWISS Golf Traveller members whenever Lufthansa, SWISS or Austrian Airlines operates.

Buying a bag during online check-in

  • Economy Basic passengers on short- and medium-haul flights who did not buy a carry-on bag earlier can add one during online check-in for a fee. The first checked bag (23 kg, 158 cm) at the reduced price can be added the same way on Economy Basic and Light.
  • Any passenger can add standard bags during online check-in if the ticket is confirmed (not waitlisted), the carry-on is within 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 8 kg, the checked bag is within 23 kg (Economy and Premium Economy) or 32 kg (Business and First) and 158 cm (height + width + depth), and you check in online more than 2 hours before departure.
  • Available on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Discover Airlines and Air Dolomiti flights. Up to five bags can be bought this way; for more, or for a bag over the weight or size, call the Service Center or pay at the airport.
  • A bag charge is not refunded separately once paid. It can be refunded or changed if the ticket allows a refund, after an involuntary ticket change or refund, or after an upgrade to a higher fare.

Extra bags and excess baggage

Excess baggage means a bag over the free weight or size, or more bags than your fare includes. In Economy and Premium Economy a bag is overweight above 23 kg (up to a maximum of 32 kg) and oversized above 158 cm (up to a maximum of 292 cm in total). In Business and First a bag counts as oversized above 158 cm up to 292 cm. Bags over 32 kg are not accepted as baggage; send them as air freight with Lufthansa Cargo. On some routes an Economy passenger gets discounted fees for the second 23 kg bag. If you travel with another airline for part of the trip, ask that airline about its own excess fees.

Overweight or oversized single piece (flat rates)

These flat rates apply when your checked bags match your allowance but one exceeds the weight or size, or when you check more pieces than your allowance.

Lufthansa's page does not list which countries belong to the "Levant and North Africa" or the short-, medium- and long-haul intercontinental zones; your booking shows the zone and price that apply. Label every bag with your name and phone number, outside and inside. Tags and stickers are free at the check-in counter.

Special baggage

Sports equipment

Register early

Register sports baggage 72 hours or more before departure, through a travel agency or online, and wait until the booking shows it confirmed. Skis and snowboards that travel as free baggage need this too. Carriage depends on hold space and is not guaranteed. The flat rates are paid at the airport.

Not carried

Vaulting poles are completely prohibited. Equipment over 32 kg and over 315 cm is not accepted as baggage (send it as air freight).

Free carriage

Winter sports equipment is carried free in addition to your free allowance (one ski or snowboard item), other than trips to or from the USA, Mexico and Central America, and other than Economy Basic (short- and medium-haul) and Light fares. Other sports equipment counts as part of your free allowance if the number of pieces and weight stay within it (not on Economy Light).

Bicycles

Need a bicycle travel case or bag. Lufthansa sells no packaging at the airport.

Ski bags

Always handled as bulky baggage at the special counters (Munich 425-426; Frankfurt 301-304 between halls A and B). In Frankfurt, be there 90 minutes or more ahead of departure.

Firearms

Only sporting, hunting and duty firearms, handed in two hours or more before departure, with an airline transport permit requested via the online form once booked. Extra airport fees: South Africa (USD 80), Italy (EUR 60), Spain (EUR 60), Turkey (EUR 30), Zurich (CHF 60) and Geneva (CHF 200, or CHF 250 if handed in over two hours ahead). Firearms are not carried to or from London Heathrow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow.

Musical instruments

Small instruments in the cabin

Free if packed and up to 125 cm (height + width + length) and 8 kg, except on Economy Basic short- and medium-haul. The instrument takes the place of your carry-on bag (55 x 40 x 23 cm), so another carry-on bag may be refused. You can still take the personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm). This includes guitars: a larger one must go in an extra seat or the hold.

Larger instruments

Reserve an extra seat while booking your own ticket (through the Service Center). The price follows the available ticket prices. Cabin limits: 155 x 42 x 25 cm (height, width, depth) for an instrument resting on the floor ahead of the seat, or 110 x 42 x 50 cm strapped into the seat, with a maximum weight of 75 kg.

In the hold

As an extra bag inside the excess baggage size limits, in a sturdy, well-padded case. Traditional carrying cases will not do.

Pets

  • Cabin: a dog or cat weighing 8 kg or less with its transport container may travel as extra carry-on baggage, for a fee (the animals page does not give the amount). Larger dogs and cats, and all other species, are not allowed in the cabin.
  • Hold: dogs and cats over 8 kg including container can travel as excess baggage in the air-conditioned hold. Other animals go as air freight with Lufthansa Cargo or an animal freight forwarder.
  • Limits: up to two animals per passenger, not for commercial purposes: 2 of the same species in one cabin carrier; 1 in the cabin and 1 in the hold; 2 in the hold in separate containers; or 2 of the same species in one hold container (adult animals of similar size up to 14 kg each, or two weaned puppies or kittens of one litter, up to 6 months old and no more than 14 kg each).
  • Minimum age: 12 weeks for dogs and cats, 15 weeks for flights to, from or via Germany, and six months for dogs headed to the USA. Pregnant animals and animals with visible illness or injuries are not accepted.
  • Registering: register online or via a travel agency three days or more before departure, or with the Service Center a day ahead (two days for assistance dogs). For USA flights, send the online form three days or more ahead and carry two signed printouts of the cabin form; the Service Center cannot register them.
  • USA: dogs need the CDC Dog Import Form. Lufthansa now takes dog reservations only for Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, New York JFK, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and to Newark if the dog stayed out of any high-risk rabies area in the six months before entry.
  • Assistance dogs: carried in the cabin at no charge once the CDC entry rules are met.
  • Check-in: online check-in opens 30 hours ahead of take-off. A passenger with a pet in the cabin collects the boarding pass at the airport counter. A passenger whose pet is in the hold can check in online but cannot use self-service bag drop.

Connecting flights and other airlines

  • Bags are normally checked through to the final destination. They cannot be if the airport changes, there are operational limits, or customs in the transit country require you to collect them. Anyone landing in India, the USA or Canada from an intercontinental flight and then continuing inside the same country collects the bags, clears customs and checks them in once more.
  • When a ticket includes several airlines, the baggage rules of the carrier on the most significant route (normally the longest) apply under its own flight number, up to any stopover of more than 24 hours, whoever operates the flight.
  • On journeys to, from or via the USA or Canada, the same rules (allowance, size, weight and cabin baggage) apply on every leg, determined by the first airline on the ticket. Lufthansa cannot promise its own rules will always be used, since that airline can pass the decision to the carrier concerned.
  • For US-bound flights, the TSA may break open locked bags, so a TSA-approved lock is advised.

Hello, I am traveling to Hyderabad via Hanover to Frankfurt ( Lufthansa ), Frankfurt to Muscut (Oman Air ), and Muscut to Hyderabad ( Oman Air). I have allotted 30 kgs of check-in baggage. So, my concern is can I take 1 piece of luggage i.e, (1 piece = 30 kg ) Thank you.
    1. Answer

On Lufthansa domestic flight, free check in baggage allowance for economy passengers is 1 bag of 23 kg for every adult passenger. Oman airways allows 30 kg free allowance. There is a codeshare agreement between the two carriers which means that there will be a common baggage allowance policy as well. Since your ticket mentions, 30 kg, it canbe presumed to be the check-in baggage allowance. You shall be able to take it in 1 check-in bag.

I understand Bangalore-Dresden Economy allows one 23Kg Check-in baggage. If I want to take additional baggage of 23Kg, how much extra I have to pay? Can I buy/pay this at check-in counter or any advance inline service available?
    1. Answer

USD 230 or USD 287 is the charge for an additional bag in check-in above the free allowance limits (weight up to 23 kg and linear dimensions up to 158 cm). You are required to book the excess baggage ahead of flight date by contacting the airline. The customer support of the airline will inform whether this can be paid at the airport or not. Hi,
Your answer came in too late.
But just for the sake if someone has the same question - your answer is wrong!
Zam-zam water can be taken IN ADDITION to the permitted baggage allowance. It has to be sealed and in a particular packaging, which is provided like this at the airport. It has to be checked in seperately, meaning it cannot be within the luggage itself.
    1. Answer

Thanks for adding this to our information. Even we base our answers on what others have experienced and have told us. This signals that the airline has changed its ZAMZAM water carriage policy because earlier it took it as a part of check in baggage and not in addition to it. Thanks once again.

    How much for extra 10kg?

Flying from Toronto to Frankfurt Economy with connecting flight to MALTA BY LUFTHANSA. Do we get one checked in luggage for free each and a carry on bag for free as long as we meet the criteria of weight and size?
    1. Answer

The check in baggage allowance on Lufthansa flights is based on piece system. So, number of pieces matter in primary consideration. Therefore, if you want to take an additional bag keeping the overall weight same, it will not be free as the number of pieces being carried is more than the prescribed limit.

    Hi..
I have enquired regarding the baggage details of Lufthansa. I have booked ticket in Economy class and I m travelling to US from chennai.
It was mentioned that from your customer care reply mail that I am allowed to take 23kg I.e., 1 checked in and a handlaggage of 8kgs. But when I enquired via phone call to Lufthansa customer care, they have mentioned that 1 can carry 2 checked in bags of 23kgs each for a person and a handlaggae of 8 KGS.

I am totally confused. Kindly reply me asap.
    1. Answer

It is now that you have clearly mentioned the route  of the airline. In your previous query, you had mentioned the flight number and NJ. The flight number was not of US destination, so we mentioned that allowance.

For all US routes, the economy class ticket would allow 2 bags of 23 kg each. Hand baggage of 8 kg is okay.
