Other checked baggage rules
- Heaviest bag: no single bag over 32 kg.
- Etihad Guest members: some extra benefits depend on your tier; Etihad shows them in your booking.
- Connecting flights: you may have to collect and re-check your bags, depending on route and country. Flights to the USA from Abu Dhabi pre-clear US customs, and your bags travel on to where you are finally going.
- Partner airlines: allowances may differ when a partner flies. For trips beginning or finishing in the USA, the rules of the first airline on the ticket govern the whole trip (its own policy or the most significant carrier's).
- TVs: can go in checked baggage. An oversized baggage fee applies only if the TV is 40 inches or bigger, on any route.
- Sports equipment and musical instruments: most sports equipment, including golf clubs, counts within your allowance. An instrument placed in the hold needs good packing and a limit of 32 kg and 300 cm. Larger instruments need an extra seat bought in advance. Cameras, film, lighting and sound equipment can be checked; let Etihad know ahead.
- Wheelchairs and aids: you may bring a personal wheelchair or assistive device at no cost, on top of your allowance. A battery-powered wheelchair needs prior approval.
- Zamzam water: one package of up to 5 litres is free, in addition to your allowance, from any departure point. It must be sealed in a plastic container inside a cardboard box. From Jeddah you need an Umrah or Hajj visa.
In checked bags
- Not permitted: spare or loose batteries and power banks, electronic cigarettes with refills and e-liquids, safety matches and cigarette lighters.
- Permitted: knives, sharp objects and cutting tools, blunt instruments, deflated inflatables, cremated remains, certain sports equipment, and liquids (including Zamzam water), aerosols and gels over 100 ml.
- Pack medicine (with a prescription or doctor's letter), fragile or valuable items, chargers, and important documents in your cabin bag.
Excess baggage
Excess baggage is sold in blocks of 5 kg on weight routes and per bag on piece routes. A single piece of extra baggage may not weigh more than 32 kg and must fit the size limits.

Questions travellers ask us
What number of bags may I check?
To or from the USA, Canada, Tunisia or Morocco: 2 bags in Economy (not Basic) up to 23 kg each, or 2 bags up to 32 kg in Business, First and The Residence. Everywhere else any number of bags is fine within your weight allowance, with 32 kg as the cap per bag.
My ticket is a Basic fare. Is a hold bag possible?
Not free. Basic fares carry no hold allowance. Add a bag with Manage your booking and pay as much as 65% less than at the airport.
May I bring a television?
Yes, in checked baggage. You pay an oversized fee only if it is 40 inches or bigger.
Can I take golf clubs or a musical instrument?
Yes. They count towards your allowance. An instrument must weigh no more than 32 kg and be no more than 300 cm. If it is too big for the hold, buy an extra seat in advance.
Can I bring Zamzam water?
Yes: one package up to 5 litres, free and in addition to your allowance, packed sealed in a cardboard box. From Jeddah you need an Umrah or Hajj visa.
Is my allowance the same on a partner airline's flight?
Not always. Your ticket lists the allowance for every part of the journey. When the trip begins or ends in the USA, whichever airline you fly first sets the rules.
Baggage Allowance is an independent information site and is not part of Etihad Airways.
