- Duty-free: sensible amounts of spirits, cigarettes and perfume are permitted in every class, but airport liquid rules may stop liquids from passing security.

Checked baggage
Emirates uses two systems. On weight routes any number of bags is accepted up to your total weight allowance. On piece routes you get a set number of bags, each with its own weight limit.
Which routes use which system
- Piece routes
- Flights to and from the Americas (North, Central and South America); flights from Africa; and flights into Africa on tickets dated 9 August 2021 or later
- Weight routes
- All other Emirates routes, including Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and New Zealand, and flights into Africa on tickets issued before 9 August 2021
Journeys out of Australia, New Zealand or Asia towards North or South America, with a Dubai stopover beyond 24 hours or a European sector, fall under the weight system for the whole ticket. A stopover of more than 24 hours on the way into Africa may also bring in the weight system.

Emirates Skywards members
- Weight routes: Platinum, Gold and Silver members get extra baggage allowance. Emirates shows the amount in your booking.

Excess baggage
Prices in this section are in US dollars (USD) or Canadian dollars (CAD), as Emirates quotes them.
Excess rates apply once your total weight or bag count, sports gear included, passes the free allowance. Extra allowance can be bought on adult and child fares, but not infant ones. The ticket must be an Emirates one (number starting 176), for flights that Emirates both markets and flies.
Does the price depend on when you pay?
Yes. Buying before you reach the airport is cheaper.
Extra weight (weight routes)
- Buy in advance
- Up to 45% off the airport fee. Sold in blocks of 5 kg, up to 50 kg. Example: London to India, 35% off for an extra 5 kg and 45% off for an extra 20 kg
- At the airport
- Full per-kg rate (table below)
- Book by
- Online, at Emirates retail or contact centres, up to 4 hours before departure
Extra pieces (piece routes)
- Buy in advance
- 15% off the airport price on selected routes, when you buy up to 5 extra pieces together
- At the airport

- Book by
- Up to 4 hours before departure; discounts may not be available on every route
You can pay online in Manage your booking in the currency of your ticket, or use Cash+Miles to reduce the cash you pay. At the airport payment is normally at the check-in desk in local money, but some airports take neither cash nor debit cards, so have a credit card ready. Emirates may refuse extra baggage at check-in for safety and operational reasons.

More than 15 bags
Checking in more than 15 bags may mean Emirates cannot fly them all with you, for safety and operational reasons. The surplus bags then follow on a later flight and arrive within five days. US flights, in either direction, are exempt.
If another airline's baggage policy applies to your ticket (interline or codeshare), you buy extra baggage from that airline.
Special baggage
Sports equipment, musical instruments and similar items go in your checked baggage and count towards your normal allowance. If you go over it, excess rates apply.
Golf, ski and other sports equipment
Accepted as checked baggage within your allowance. On weight routes an item over 300 cm in total cannot be checked and must go as cargo. On piece routes the whole sports set must be within 300 cm.
Ski and snowboard
A set is one pair of skis, ski poles and ski boots, or one snowboard and boots. A water-ski set is one pair of water skis or one slalom ski. Extra charges can apply in some situations, especially to the Americas.
Bicycles
Contact Emirates a day or more before you fly. Packaging requirements can apply.
Windsurf, kitesurf, kayak, body boards, pole vault
Accepted if any sails detach and collapse and the item is in a hard-shell case.
Scuba equipment
Suits, fins, masks, snorkels and buoyancy devices are fine. Air bottles must be empty.
Sporting firearms
Unloaded, in a suitcase or gun case, and approved by Emirates at least three days before you fly. Ammunition goes in a sealed box inside a suitcase, up to 5 kg per customer. Flights entering or passing through Dubai also need UAE clearance.
Mobility and medical items (free of charge)
A fully collapsible wheelchair, braces or crutches, one portable dialysis machine with its equipment, and CPAP or PAP machines. Assistance dogs travel in a kennel in the hold.
Not allowed on board
Items containing explosives and personal motorised vehicles.
Questions travellers ask us
How big can my cabin bag be?
In Economy and Premium Economy, 55 x 38 x 22 cm. If you board in India, the three sides together must also be no more than 115 cm, and you may carry only one piece.
What does "piece concept" mean?
You get a fixed number of bags, each with its own weight limit, rather than a total weight. The Americas in either direction, flights leaving Africa and flights entering Africa on tickets issued from 9 August 2021 use this system.
Can I take golf clubs, a bicycle or a musical instrument?
Sports equipment is accepted as checked baggage within your allowance; call Emirates at least 24 hours ahead for a bicycle. Check the dimensions limit for your route type: 300 cm in total.
How much will extra baggage cost?
The answer varies by route. On weight routes it is a rate per kilogram, from USD 15 to USD 50 at the airport. On piece routes it is a price per extra piece. Buy before you travel and you can save up to 45% (weight) or 15% (pieces). See the tables above.
What can I carry for a baby?
A cabin bag of up to 5 kg, a carrycot or collapsible stroller if there is room, and checked baggage of 10 kg (23 kg to and from the Americas and Africa).
Can I take liquids and powders in my hand luggage?
Liquids in containers of 100 ml or less in one transparent 1-litre bag. Powders of 350 ml or more must be checked when flying to, from or via the US, or from or via Australia and New Zealand.
Baggage Allowance is an independent information site and is not part of Emirates.

I have a flight with Emirates Manchester to Auckland via Dubai booked . My ticket is Economy Flex.
I’m a bit confused about baggage allowances. Am I correct in thinking I am allowed:
1 x Hand/Cabin luggage no larger than 55 x 38 x 20 cm and 7 kg?
Hold/Checked Luggage 30kg and linear dimensions [L+W+H] up to 300 cms? I have seen 150 cms quoted and simply don’t know what to believe. Am I confusing the Linear Dimensions between Weight Concept [which I think my route is?] with that under the Piece Concept?
I’d be very grateful if you could clarify whether it is 150 cms or 300 cms I should be concerned with, please?
Kind Regards
