Air France Special Assistance

France · IATA AF

Last updated: 31 October 2026.

Air France helps travellers with disabilities, pregnant women and children who fly alone. Where a partner airline flies your booking, the partner's rules apply and Air France passes your request to it, so confirm that it was received.

Passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility

  • Ask for assistance while booking online, using the special assistance option in the Passenger step, or afterwards in My Bookings. It has to arrive two days or more before your first flight, preferably sooner.
  • You pick seats after buying, in My Bookings. If that was not possible you are seated together at the airport, and on flights to or from the USA the passenger and companion get adjacent seats free of charge on the day at the latest.
  • Direct flights reduce wheelchair handling. For connections, plan at least 1.5 hours between flights.
  • In the United States the airline offers transport between gates by wheelchair or electric cart, boarding help and help with visual, hearing, cognitive or mobility needs, plus approved portable oxygen concentrators on request.
  • Medical clearance is not needed in most cases. Air France's medical service must approve contagious disease, stretcher or incubator transport, oxygen above 2.8 litres a minute, or a condition needing unusual medical help on board; send the two-part form at least 48 hours before departure.
  • A travel companion aged 18 or over may be required for a mental disability that stops someone applying safety instructions, for someone both blind and deaf, or for a motor disability that prevents taking part in evacuation. Most people with quadriplegia need one; most with paraplegia do not. A companion may not also be responsible for a child below 4 (France) or 5 (international), or for another disabled passenger.
  • With a cast or immobilised limb that cannot be seated upright, call 48 hours ahead: medium-haul flights need an extra seat and long-haul a Business seat.

Pregnancy

  • No medical clearance is needed, but the airline recommends asking your doctor.
  • Avoid travelling from week 37 and in the 7 days after childbirth.
  • Tips: wear compression stockings, move around, choose an aisle seat, drink often, fasten the belt low on the pelvis below the belly. Special meals can be ordered for flights lasting at least two and a half hours.

  • Booking is reserved to a legal guardian or a person they authorise. Book online for Air France flights, or call customer service for connections with other airlines. If Kids Solo is missing from the booking, the flight may be full.
  • Complete the travel form with the names of the person who accompanies and the one who collects. Bring 2 copies for a direct flight, 3 with one connection and 4 with more. Delta flights use a separate form given at the airport.
  • Connection airports for the service: Paris CDG and Orly, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Toulouse, Fort-de-France, Pointe-a-Pitre, Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York JFK, Montreal and Singapore; transfers between Orly and CDG are not available.
  • At the airport, staff say where to hand over the child and verify the documents; at most airports an agent walks the child to the boarding area and watches over them to the aircraft door. At some airports you walk with the child, with a pass. Stay until you receive the text confirming take-off. The person collecting is also texted the expected landing time.
  • A child leaving France without a parent must hold an AST, the authorisation to leave French territory. Business and La Premiere lounges are not offered to children travelling alone.

Air France can take carry-on as checked baggage for disabled person with mobility issues ?
    1. Answer

We do not think it is possible to add cabin bag to check in bag for free if it exceed the check in baggage limits of free allowance. However, if it does not exceed the check in baggage allowance limits of size, weight and number of pieces, then you can take cabin bag as check in one.

I am 76 and soon travelling with a 66-year-old lady and a 21-year young lady from Birmingham to Johannesburg via Charles de Gaulle airport. I see that our flight into CDG comes into terminal 2e and also our onward flight to Johannesburg. The 66-year-old lady does not like walking far in an airport though she is not disabled and neither am I nor the 21 yr old. What assistance do you suggest?
    1. Answer

Please visit this link: https://www.parisaeroport.fr/en/passengers/access/paris-charles-de-gaulle/inter-terminal-shuttles You will find free shuttle services at the Paris CDG airport. Otherwise, you will can check with the airport authorites whether they have any other means of transportation internally within the airport.

My daughter will be traveling alone with a 11 month old baby. She flies from Tel Aviv to Paris and then has a 5 hour layover to transfer to continuing flight to San Francisco. She will need help with carry on and baby and getting luggage in SFO. to go through passport control and with luggage through customs.
What do I need to do to arrange help for her?
    Thank you. Sharon

  4. Adi23 March 2015
I want to book a ticket for my mom from Bucharest to Toronto.
My mom does not speak English or French and never flew with an airplane.
She is a senior and she will need a wheelchair and someone to help her check in in Paris (CDG) to next flight to Toronto.
What type of service I must ask for? Also I want to book through expedia.ca where is saying: "Please contact the airline to confirm special assistance requests."
    How to proceed?

    Regards,
    Adi
    1. Answer

There will be no issues, but you will have to inform Air France about the special needs of your mother at least 48 hours before the scheduled departure of flight. It would be good if you provide this information even earlier. They do have a Saphir service for reduced mobility people and provision for providing more leg room seats for seniors (called Seat Plus program). There will no problem even in catching the connecting flights since assistance at airport is provided but the precise needs have to be communicated to the airline.
