What you get back depends on why you cancel and on the fare you bought. Ask for the refund through the channel you bought from: Trips for aircanada.com, the app, contact centres, Aeroplan, Kayak, Google Flights or Skyscanner bookings; travel agent bookings through the agent; Air Canada Vacations through its own site.

If you cancel (voluntary)
- Cancel in the first 24 hours after buying and the money returns to the original payment method; a fare difference applies to a rebooking.
- After 24 hours, eligibility depends on the fare type; you can read the fare rules on the booking review screen and on your itinerary receipt.
- No refund processing charge is made, though your fare may carry a change or cancellation fee.
- Taxes and fees: what returns depends on the ticket type, whether any of it was flown, and the rules of the country where you bought it or leave from. Canada's security charge is repayable inside 24 months if you never left from Canada.
If the airline cancels or delays (involuntary)
- The unused part is refundable when Air Canada cancels, when the delay reaches 3 hours at departure or arrival, when you are moved to another airport or to more stops, or downgraded on a US flight, provided you turn down the rebooking or credit.
- Alternatives: rebook, or take AC Wallet or future travel credit.
- A delayed bag's fee is returned automatically once the baggage report arrives, and fees are also repaid when a cancelled or rescheduled flight leaves you not travelling (apply by online form).
- Extras you paid for but did not get, such as a seat, are repaid quickly after you tell the airline.
Processing time
- Refunds on eligible tickets are due within 30 calendar days.
- For flights to and from the USA, the airline tries to refund credit-card purchases within 7 business days, and other forms of payment within 20 calendar days. A card statement can take a billing cycle to show the refund.

Please note that we are not the airline and are not associated with it. We are an independent website. Now, with respect to your query. The airline can not charge you for 3 checkin bags if you have carried 2. Second, please check whether you were carrying anything which would have been deemed to be a check in baggage. Even an additional piece apart from the 2 check-in bags allowance could be deemed to be the third check in bag. If that was not the case, then please get in touch with the airline directly and seek an explanation from them.
