Delta's baggage charts can look complicated, and the structure has changed since this article was first written. The old version split the rules by international region and quoted first-bag fees of 25 and second-bag fees of 40 dollars on US routes. The fees below are Delta's current figures for trips inside the USA, the US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. Amounts are in US dollars and apply to each direction of travel.
First and second bag
These apply to Delta Comfort and Delta Main fares on US domestic trips when you have no SkyMiles American Express card, no Medallion status and no military exemption:
- First checked bag up to 50 lb (23 kg): $45. A carry-on and a personal item travel free.
- Second checked bag up to 50 lb (23 kg): $55.
- Size limit: the three dimensions together must stay within 62 inches (157 cm).
You can add bags at check-in, in the 24-hour online window on delta.com or in the Fly Delta app, or at a kiosk at the airport. Many airports let you pay with miles.
Who gets bags free
- SkyMiles Medallion members and eligible SkyMiles American Express cardholders can check their first standard bag free on domestic flights.
- Eligible Basic Card members also get the second standard bag free on domestic Delta flights. Up to nine people on the same booking can share the waiver.
- The waiver covers bags that are not overweight or oversize.

Bags of 100 lb (45.36 kg) or more, and bags larger than 80 inches (203 cm), are not accepted. A bag that breaks several limits is charged for each one. An extra bag that is also heavy and large, for example, attracts three fees. For flights that begin or end in Canada or Europe, the fee may be charged in Canadian dollars or euros.
Limits on the number of bags
- Up to 10 checked bags per passenger on flights operated by Delta or Delta Shuttle.
- Up to 4 bags on flights operated by Delta Connection carriers, which carry extra bags on a space-available basis.
