Wheelchairs and reduced mobility
- Ask for an airport wheelchair in My Trip, or get in touch two days ahead. Other needs can go through the KLM Cares form, phone or email.
- Allow 2.5 hours for a European flight or 3.5 for an intercontinental one, sign in at the assistance desk in the check-in hall, and expect to board first and leave last.
- Airport wheelchairs are not for self-propelling; an agent or your companion pushes. KLM and KLM Cityhopper aircraft carry foldable aisle wheelchairs.
- Cabin staff may not lift or carry you, assist in the toilet, feed you or give medical care, so bring a companion for those; if you could not leave the aircraft unaided in an emergency, a safety assistant is also required, and boarding is refused without one. KLM tries to seat you together at no extra cost.
- For connections allow at least 2.5 hours at Schiphol; a minimum of 90 minutes is advised in general.
- Your own wheelchair travels free, but request transport at least 48 hours ahead because places are limited. A foldable manual wheelchair can go in the cabin up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm and 12 kg; otherwise it travels in the hold, or is checked at the gate free if the cabin is full. Electric wheelchairs travel only in the hold; arrive 3 hours (European) or 4 hours (intercontinental) before departure.
- Hold limits: Airbus A330 and Boeing 777/787, 152 x 139 x 149 cm; Boeing 737, 112 x 113 x 85 cm; Embraer 175, 190 and 195-E2, 120 x 100 x 80 cm and up to 149 kg.
- Walking sticks and crutches go in the overhead bin; a wheeled walker travels as checked baggage. A stretcher service exists at extra cost with a medical escort.
- A Sunflower lanyard can signal an invisible disability; it does not guarantee assistance.
Pregnancy
- In most cases flying is safe. KLM advises against flying from 36 weeks and in the first week after delivery.
- KLM suggests getting your doctor's clearance, which you need not submit beforehand, and telling staff your due date. With twins or earlier complications, always consult your doctor first.
Children travelling alone
- 5 to 14
- The Unaccompanied Minor service must be booked when no adult of 18 or over travels with the child, or the adult sits in another cabin
- 15 to 17
- Optional; without it the teenager is treated as an adult passenger
- Add it to the ticket on the KLM website a day or more before departure. It applies to every direct flight; connections are allowed only with KLM, Air France and Delta.
- Cost: an adult fare plus EUR 100 to 150 for direct flights or EUR 200 to 300 with a transfer, charged each way.
- Take the child to the desk two and a half hours before departure with a valid travel document, a copy of the passport, ID for the adult who brings them, four printed copies of the KLM form and, where needed, the Dutch government consent letter. The adult must stay until the plane leaves.
- Staff take the child to the seat, crew watch during the flight, and a lounge is provided for long transfers; on arrival, the child is handed to the authorised person with matching ID.
