Malaysia Airlines Fare Types for Flights

Malaysia Airlines sells three cabins, Economy, Business Class and Business Suite, and divides economy into fare brands. The earlier version of this article listed the booking class letters behind each level (for example J, C, D and Z for business, and Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N, Q, O and G for economy). Those letters still sit behind your ticket, but the airline now presents the fares by brand name, which is what you choose when booking.

Cabins and fare brands

  • Business Suite: the top cabin, with its own fare levels.
  • Business Class: several fare levels.
  • Economy: brands called Lite, Basic, Value and Flex. Flex is also used for Shuttle fares.

The brand sets your free baggage allowance, how you earn and use frequent flyer benefits and your rules for changes and refunds. Malaysia Airlines shows the allowance for each brand as it sells the ticket, and the full tables are on its baggage page.

Seat selection by fare

FareSeats you pay for
Business Class and Business SuiteNone, seat selection is free
Economy Basic and FlexEconomy Comfort, extra legroom, emergency exit, front row and window seats
Economy ValueThe same seats plus standard seats

Fees depend on the route and are charged for each passenger on each flight, in the currency of the country where you buy, with sales and service tax added.

Cabin baggage

  • Economy: one cabin bag up to 7 kg. One personal item may be carried inside that same 7 kg.
  • Business Class and Business Suite: two cabin bags, 14 kg in total and no more than 7 kg each.

Checked baggage

  • Every bag must measure under 158 cm in length plus width plus height. Bags from 158 to 204 cm are oversize and may attract a surcharge. Larger items go as cargo with MASKargo.
  • No bag may weigh more than 32 kg.
  • The allowance can be counted as total weight or as a number of pieces. Your ticket shows which.
  • Passengers ticketed on a government warrant are entitled to 40 kg on all routes.
  • Wheelchairs, walking aids and infant equipment such as strollers and car seats are carried at no extra charge.

Lounge access

Business Class and Business Suite passengers get lounge access with the ticket. Economy passengers on Lite, Basic and Flex fares can buy it online, at booking or later in Manage My Booking, up to 60 minutes before departure.
