TAP Air Portugal Baggage Allowance

These rules cover flights flown by TAP, by someone on its behalf, or by TAP Express. When another airline runs the flight, follow that airline's rules. Prices are in euro (EUR), with US dollar (USD) and Canadian dollar (CAD) equivalents where TAP gives them.

Cabin baggage

A personal item can be a computer briefcase, handbag or shoulder bag, a duty-free bag, a walking aid, or a medical device (request approval up to 48 hours before travel for medical devices).

Navigator, TAP MilesGo Gold or Star Alliance Gold members flying First or Business on two or more Star Alliance carriers may take at least 2 pieces of 10 kg, each 55 x 40 x 25 cm.

On busy flights some hand baggage may be moved to the hold without charge, even within the limits. It is handed over at check-in or the gate and comes back at the baggage carousel. Remove valuables, electronics and medication first.

Checked baggage

Hold baggage may weigh up to 23 kg in Economy and 32 kg in Business, with a maximum size of 158 cm (height + length + width). Anything over 32 kg must go as cargo. The number of free pieces depends on your fare, your route and your TAP MilesGo status.

• Africa routes (medium and long haul): Plus and Classic fares receive two bags of 23 kg.
• Luanda or Maputo routes: Basic fares receive two bags of 23 kg and Discount fares one bag of 23 kg.
• Frequent flyers: Navigator, TAP MilesGo Gold, Star Alliance Gold members and TAP Platinum Visa cardholders can carry one extra piece regardless of fare: up to 23 kg in Economy and Economy Prime, up to 32 kg in Business.

Buying extra baggage

Extra hold bags can be bought online in advance from EUR 30 / USD 37 / CAD 49 per piece. The price depends on where and when you buy it, the date and your route. Check the price in the booking process or in Manage your Booking, at online check-in, at TAP kiosks and desks in airports, via the TAP Contact Center or a travel agency. The service is not refundable.

Excess and oversize baggage

If hold baggage goes over the weight (23 kg up to 32 kg) or size (over 158 cm) in your fare, a fee applies at the airport. It depends on the route and season. The three columns are: excess weight from 23 to 32 kg, oversize over 158 cm, and both together.

High season for most destinations (Accra to São Tomé included): 11 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, 19 March to 5 April 2027, and 1 July to 31 August 2027. All other dates are low season. Some African destinations have longer high seasons of their own, such as Accra, São Tomé, Praia and São Vicente, from 5 December 2026 to 4 January 2027 and 5 June to 5 September 2027.

Hand baggage that is too big

If cabin baggage is over the weight or size limit it goes in the hold and you pay by credit card at the gate.

Sports equipment

Sports gear may use your free hold allowance when it stays within 32 kg and 158 cm (height + length + width). More sports gear can be added online until 24 hours before the flight, if space allows, from EUR 45 / USD 57 / CAD 78 (or 9,000 miles). It is offered on TAP-operated flights only, and some aircraft have limited room.

• Bicycles and tandems: non-motorised, mountain and racing bikes go in the hold. Turn the handlebars 90 degrees, remove the pedals, or wrap the bike in cellophane or pack it in a cardboard box.
• Golf: clubs, balls, gloves and 1 pair of shoes in a bag count as one piece up to 158 cm.
• Diving: 1 empty air tank, regulator, pressure gauge, harness, mask, 2 fins, snorkel, knife, harpoon and a suit count as one piece up to 158 cm. Hold only, well packed.
• Fishing: a fishing box, a net, a pair of rods properly packed and a reel.
• Skiing: 1 pair of skis, poles and boots, or a snowboard and boots.
• Surf, kitesurf, windsurf: boards need proper packing.
• Hang gliding, paragliding, pole vaulting and other equipment: contact TAP before the flight.

Musical instruments

• Carried on board as hand baggage: free up to 10 kg and 55 x 40 x 25 cm.
• On an extra seat: up to 30 kg, and 155 x 42 x 25 cm on the cabin floor or 110 x 42 x 50 cm on the seat. Book through the TAP Contact Center or a travel agency, not online. Not allowed for passengers seated near emergency exits. The extra seat costs the same fare as your ticket plus taxes and fees.

Pets

Only dogs and cats can travel as pets (other species go as cargo). Book at least 24 hours before the flight. Pets must be over 6 months old, in a carrier, and up to 5 pets can travel on a flight. Pets are not carried on GOL and Azul flights.

• In the cabin: up to 8 kg with the carrier, in a carrier of up to 45 x 30 x 23 cm, from EUR 40 / USD 51 / CAD 70 (or 8,000 miles). One carrier can hold up to two pets of one species. Book via Manage your Booking, the TAP Contact Center, a TAP airport desk or a travel agency.
• In the hold: up to 32 kg including the carrier on flights to, from or via the US, Hungary, France and the Netherlands, and up to 45 kg for other destinations. A hold carrier can hold up to three pets of the same species. Book through the TAP Contact Center, a TAP airport desk or a travel agency.
