Volaris carries musical instruments in the cabin when they are small enough and in the hold when they are not. This update follows the airline's current baggage page. The 2019 version of this article set the cabin limit at 51 inches and 10 kg, which no longer matches what Volaris publishes.
In the cabin
An instrument up to 22 x 16 x 10 inches can go in the cabin as carry-on baggage. Anything bigger goes in the hold, and you pay the instrument fee online in My Trips or at the airport.
Checked instruments
- If you also check other bags and the total goes over 55 lb, extra weight charges apply.
- Oversize charges apply if the instrument's length plus width plus height is more than 62 inches.
- The largest size Volaris accepts for a checked instrument is 78.7 inches in total.
- Put the entire instrument in a transport case, ideally a hard one.
Instruments Volaris names as acceptable
- Guitars, bass guitars and violins
- Flutes and trumpets
- Drum kit accessories such as cymbals
- Keyboards
- Saxophones
They must meet the size and weight limits above.
Prices
Volaris sets the instrument fee in its additional services fee tables, which differ by season, route and when you pay. The fee is lower online, so add the service in My Trips before you reach the airport. The exact amount is shown when you add the service. See also Volaris sports equipment.
