AirAsia is the low cost carrier of Malaysia. Its policies are dependent on domestic and international flight routes.
Checked Luggage Allowance: It does not provide a free check in baggage allowance. Luggage restrictions are related to weight and dimensions, and the fee for checked-in baggage is based on weight of bags and the airport from which the flight is taking off. There are two components of charges for luggage. For 15 kgs or less, the flat rate is charged and above it, charges are based on per kg depending upon the airport.
There is also a provision of opting for prices of pre-booked luggage. Savings can be as much as 50% of baggage costs if you upsize or supersize your luggage at least 4 hours before departure of flight. Upsizing baggage means pre-buying 5 kgs or in multiples thereof and Supersizing means buying 40 kgs of baggage in advance.
AirAsia also has a rule that fees will not be refunded if actual weight of luggage is less than the pre-booked weight. If two or more people are traveling together on same itinerary and check in together, then the allowance can be shared. However, there is a restriction on the size and weight of each bag. Each bag must not weigh more than 32 kgs and it shall not be more than 81 cm height, 119 cm width and 119 cm in depth.
Pre-booking Weight Slabs
AirAsia insists on pre-booking of checked in baggage. This can be done at a discounted rate online or at a standard rate at the airport counter. If you want to buy it online, there are different slabs for the domestic and the international flights. Domestic flights baggage come in slabs of 15/20/25/30/40 kgs while international flight slabs are 20/25/30/40kgs.
If the weight of the baggage exceeds the pre-booked one, the excess charges per kg of luggage are applied. This rate varies from destination to destination. If you are interested in knowing what these rates are, you are requested to put up your question in the comments section at the end of this page.
